Linux Standard Base (LSB), the project to develop and maintain industry-wide Linux compliance criteria, has released version 1.0.0. of its specification. The project, a joint initiative of a number of companies active in the Linux market, aims to develop and promote a set of standards that will increase compatibility between distributions and ensure that software applications to run on any compliant Linux system.

Sponsored by IBM and Hewlett Packard, the list of LSB contributors covers a broad slice of the Linux industry including Caldera, Compaq, Debian Project, Red Hat, MandrakeSoft, Corel and SuSE. The LSB was established in an effort to prevent Linux suffering the fragmentation that Unix experienced in previous years.

The LSB specification includes definitions of a "model" Linux system including details of components, features and APIs to assist software vendors to build and package their offerings to conform to accepted standards. The LSB also develops documentation in support of the LSB specification as well as promoting new standards that would "advance the state of the art in Linux".

The LSB specification includes the LSB Development Package (lsbdev) to assist developers in assessing application. The LSB can be found at www.linuxbase.org
