Apple's South African distributor, Core Group, has dropped the prices of its entire range of first-generation iPad tablet devices, barely a week after its updated model, the iPad 2, was announced.

The original iPad devices, both 3G and WiFi versions, first hit local stores at the end of January. Then retail prices for the entry-level 16GB iPad WiFi started at R4 399; but the price has now been dropped to R3 899.

The highest-end device, the 64GB iPad 3G and wireless device was retailing at R7 599 and will now go for R6 999.

Core Group communication manager Taryn Hyam explains that customers who have purchased an iPad from iStores between 3 March and close of business on 7 March are entitled to an in-store rebate to account for the difference in prices.

However, she notes that the rebate is not a cash-back offer, but customers will be offered in-store vouchers instead. Hyam points out that the rebate is exclusive to iStore customers only and it is up to other retailers to offer the rebate if they choose to.

The iPad is also available at selected Dion Wired and Incredible Connection stores. Hyam says discussions are under way to bring the iPad 2 to SA - but was unable to give further details at this stage.
