Liquid Thought has been commissioned by the Shuttleworth Foundation to develop an open source content management solution and redesign the look and feel of its Web site. The project coincided with the re-branding of the Shuttleworth Foundation's image. Phase one entailed the development of the content management solution and redesign of the Web site. Phase two involved developing funding functionality for the submission and processing of fund applications online.
According to Zulfiq Isaacs, Managing Director of Liquid Thought, the new content management solution empowers the Shuttleworth Foundation to capture and upload news and projects on the Web site, ensuring that content always remains up to date. The site can now also handle applications for the funding of education projects online.
"We are pleased with the functionality of our Web sites, especially the fact that existing open source content management frameworks were used for the base functionality and adapted to suit our exact requirements," says Kim Vosse from the Shuttleworth Foundation.
The Shuttleworth Foundation also intends to launch an open source community portal that will advocate open source resources in SA and serve as the cornerstone of the open source local community. Liquid Thought has been appointed by the Shuttleworth Foundation to develop a Web portal for its open source initiatives.
The portal is aimed at creating a virtual community for open source enthusiasts. The Shuttleworth Foundation plans to establish the portal as the leading source for open source resources online in SA. The site will provide both business and educational resources for technical and non-technical users. Some of the benefits for members of the community include discussion forums, news groups, open source software and educational resources.
"Since the Web site will contain a substantial amount of content and resources that need to be maintained and updated frequently, a content management tool was implemented to enable staff to manage the Web site themselves," says Isaacs.
"The framework and content management engine for this Web site is critical because the portal will be extremely interactive, dynamic and content-rich."
The portal will feature information about open source projects, provide a forum for discussions, perform online support through other similar forums, and provide a secure members area that will feature value-added services for registered members.
