If you re anxious to join the Linux revolution, but aren t quite so eager to spend hours downloading the operating system over the Internet, and balk at the prices of some of the official versions on offer, why not consider one of the many commercially available freeware distributions priced from as little as R29 to R39?

Johannesburg-based software distributor, OS/2 Express SA, markets the official versions of Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, Debian and Caldera OpenLinux, among others, but also offers freeware distributions at purse-pleasing prices.

While boxed, official versions of Linux, such as the new Red Hat Official Linux 6.0 and SuSE Linux 6.1, include extras such as manuals, free support from the manufacturer and CDs featuring a wide array of Linux-friendly applications, for cost-conscious consumers, the freeware distributions have been pared down to just the operating system on a single CD. Despite the absence of hard-copy documentation, these do, however, feature comprehensive online documentation. The freeware versions can also be used to upgrade previously installed official versions to the current software level.

OS/2 Express s range of Linux to suit all budgets includes previous versions of freeware distributions of Debian, Linux Pro, Caldera OpenLinux, SuSE, Slackware, FreeBSD, Mandrake, TurboLinux and Red Hat, available for between R29 and R39 including VAT. The latest freeware releases of these Linux distributions are available for R95 including VAT.

Limited stocks of SuSE Official Linux 6.0, the official version of Europe`s leading Linux distribution, which includes StarOffice 5 personal edition and installation support, are available at the special price of R195 including VAT. While, for Linux converts looking for the latest releases on offer, the brand new SuSE Official Linux 6.1 retails for R399 including VAT.

Just released, Red Hat Official Linux 6.0 is available from OS/2 Express for R899 including VAT. Red Hat Linux 6.0 includes the new Linux 2.2 kernel. The new kernel supports more hardware and improves the overall performance of the Linux OS, especially on SMP systems.

The Red Hat Linux 6.0 package comes with an Installation Manual, a Getting Started Guide, installation support, and three CDs. This includes an Application CD filled with Internet, development, database and enterprise software for the Red Hat Linux operating system, including IBM`s ViaVoice and Office 97-compatible StarOffice 5 and Applixware office suites, as well as a vast array of software in Red Hat Package Manager format for easy installation..
