Linux projects gaining momentum on java.net

Linux-based projects within the Java developer community are gaining momentum, reports Sun Microsystems SA. This is underscored by several new initiatives on java.net, a unique, online global community established to foster Java technology collaboration and innovation.

Since its launch in June 2003, java.net has gained over 16 000 registered users and initiated over 460 projects. Located at http://java.net, the site has added over 15 Java communities, such as Java Games, Java Desktop, Java Communications, Java Web Services and XML, JavaJAR, Java Incubator, Javapedia, and federated pre-existing communities such as Jini, Project JXTA, NetBeans, and the OSS/J and JAIN Initiatives.

Java.net has also become host to more than 40 Java technology and community-related Weblogs, and grown to over 30 Java user groups from more than 11 countries.

"The enduring value of Java technology is driven by the collaboration of the Java technology developer community," says Sean O'Hare, Java systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.

"The rapid growth of java.net, and the growing momentum of Java projects on Linux, illustrate the power of open collaboration on standard technology and the developer community's interest in propelling Java technology into new markets and applications."

O'Hare says there is a growing convergence of Java-Linux developer communities that will help to further expand the Java technology portfolio of applications, tools and services. Numerous java.net projects have been developed on, and support, Linux.

Some key java.net Linux projects include:

* Jinux: A 100% Java operating system on top of minimal Linux kernel. This early stage project is part of the Java Incubator community on java.net.

* Wirelessvoip: A Linux gateway and PDA via 802.11. Another early-stage project, it includes a Linux telephony server as part of its design, and is also part of the Java Communication community on java.net.

* Sip-communicator: A JAIN-SIP session initiation protocol video phone project. This mature project is also part of the Java Communications community on java.net.

Java.net is sponsored by Sun, the creator and leading advocate of Java technology, with editorial resources and technology infrastructure provided by CollabNet, Inc and O'Reilly & Associates.

"Java.net projects, communities and its members help to expand the Java technology portfolio of applications, tools and services by facilitating Java technology collaboration in applied areas of technology and vertical industry solutions," says O'Hare.

Industry veterans, such as Java technology creator James Gosling, are active contributors and participants in java.net projects, communities and blogs.
