When it comes to creating a video game from a popular movie title, many have crashed into mediocrity following the hype surrounding the movie itself. Titles like "The Punisher" and "Batman Begins" are releases that held their own and didn`t have to ride on the success wave of their respective motion pictures.
Rockstar Entertainment`s choice of movie had nothing to do with how big the movie once was. In fact, some of the younger generations will probably watch the movie because they thought the game was brilliant, as the development house exhibits its ever changing, flawless development style again.
Based on a 1979 cult classic film "The Warriors", this release is probably one of Rockstar`s most exciting titles thus far.
The story
Unlike the motion picture, the story begins two months before a big meeting/rumble between opposing street gangs. This is a clever way to acquaint the audience with the gangs, the characters and gameplay in general.
Controlling a gang called "The Warriors" based in Coney Island, players take on the roles of many different characters, depending on the mission played. The basic game objective is to take over different areas of the city, which obviously leads to outrageous turf wars and violent street fights with other gangs.
The moves
Those who have spent time playing the GTA series won`t have trouble adapting to the controls. There is very little skill involved, yet fights look extremely fast and brutal. The nature of a street fight is that anything goes: smashing the opponent`s face into a wall, cutting him with a broken bottle - all in all, savage.
The player is also able to pick up items like boxes and rubbish bins and throw them at the opponent.
Once we get past the beat-em up part of the game, a whole set of features have been put into play for the street life side of the story. Get extra cash by mugging a helpless stranger in the street, stealing car radios, breaking into liquor stores and other shops. These are some of the things that make this game particularly realistic and similar to the story that was presented in the movie.
The game is so detailed in fact, that characters are able to purchase drugs from street dealers, as well as take them.
The levels are set in dirty city streets, crawling with bums, dealers, prostitutes and gangs. A perfect playground for a gang member, with extra secret missions, people to mug and places to break into, it somehow releases the rebel inside the player and becomes very enjoyable. That is until the police show up.
Although "The Warriors" is a mix of the other Rockstar titles, it has an identity of it`s own. It captures the soul of the film, and takes it beyond the borders of the initial story and into the lives of individual characters. It brings a whole new level of reality to the third person gaming genre.
