LG launches first domestic steam washing machine in SA

LG Electronics has launched the world's first steam direct washing machine into the South African market.

The company developed a steam washing machine in response to consumer demand for energy and water-saving features, as well as a more hygienic lifestyle.

"The trend to integrate steam functions into home appliances comes from consumers' desire for a healthier lifestyle. LG's research and development team has proved that hot steam more effectively kills harmful germs on garments, carpets and fabrics," says James Tae, Managing Director, LG Electronics, South Africa.

When compared to conventional front-loading washing machines, steam washers consume 21% less energy and reduce water usage by 13%. Steam washing shortens the time necessary to achieve high temperatures, while tiny steam particles penetrate clothing more rapidly than water. This contributes to the reduction of water and energy consumption and improves washing performance.

As the size of a steam molecule is smaller than a water molecule, it creates less friction causing less damage to fabrics. The options also exist to disable the steam function for selected fabrics such as silk, wool, and other delicate material, which are not suitable for steam cleaning.

Health is another important consideration for consumers as clothes come into direct contact with skin and it's important that the fabric is not infested with germs and bacteria.

The steam washer is effective in eliminating germs and bacteria by using high temperatures. The steam sprayed onto garments during a wash cycle can reach temperatures as high as 95^0C, thereby killing bacteria that may be present in the fabric. This is of utmost importance to people with allergies or families with small children. The steam washer has received a certification from the British Allergy Foundation (BAF) for its excellence in removing allergens.

LG has also taken advantage of steam's effectiveness in removing creases and odours by developing a Steam Refresh Cycle. The Steam Refresh Cycle is a short cleaning cycle that uses steam to instantly remove wrinkles and odours from clothes, thus saving a trip to the dry cleaners and eliminating the need to iron. It is also more effective than water in removing odour particles from garments because of the strong absorption force of steam.

"Developing eco-friendly products with optimal energy efficiency is part of saving the earth and creating a healthier environment. While we try to provide a highly sanitary living environment for consumers, it is equally important that our products have the lowest possible environmental impact by saving water and consuming less energy. Our technologies help consumers live healthier lives now, and in the future," concludes Tae.
