The state-of-the-art public hospital in the heart of Khayelitsha shows the continual faith in the upliftment and development of the area. Numerous design techniques and energy saving technologies have been used that have led the hospital to receive a level 3 accreditation in terms of its carbon footprint. Not only does it make this new hospital energy efficient, but it will allow government to save on running costs.
In order to cut costs further, improve the patient experience and staff efficiency, it invested in a patient flow management (PFM) system from Emerge Queue. The solution chosen was the prestigious Victorian Public Healthcare Gold award-winning PFM solution from QmaticAB (Sweden).
While automated queuing systems are becoming more widely used throughout a wide range of client service industries, it became evident that no one in the Western Cape had previously attempted to integrate the technology with a health service's patient administration system.
The hospital is the first district hospital in the Western Cape to have an electronic content management system - patients' folders are loaded into the system electronically, allowing medical staff in other facilities to view it.
Using the same bar code, Emerge Queue tracks the patient's entire journey through the hospital. It also automatically records the consultation commencement time for that patient and the conclusion of the previous patient's consultation in the patient management system. Further, it utilises the technology for record-keeping purposes as well as monitoring waiting times. With the PFM system, the hospital can measure queue and resource performance, and furthermore, problem areas can be identified and corrected.
"We are very proud to see our systems helping hospitals improve patient satisfaction, reduce waiting times and cut costs. Our solution has not only helped them achieve these improvements, but it also makes it easy to monitor the ongoing improvements," says Eugene Swanepoel, Managing Director of Emerge Queue.
