Kalahari.com is putting more capacity in place to deal with demand.

Popular online retailer Kalahari.com is having issues with its Web site as it cannot cope with sales volumes.

This comes in the rush to the festive season, as e-tailers launch promotions to lure shoppers in, and on the same day the US participates in Black Friday.

Update

Post-publication, Kalahari has said it is extending its sale to midnight on Sunday.

Kalahari says, as it is Black Friday, it is having "some epic sales, and the site volumes are unprecedented".

The portal adds its servers are taking a little strain at the moment, but it is adding more capacity so the site speeds up. It will also add more products to the sale, it says.

"Thanks to everyone for their patience, and we will be back to normal service levels soon."

Several local sites are taking part in Black Friday, running promotions to mark the traditional spending spree day.

Black Friday comes after Thanksgiving Day in the US, which is always the fourth Thursday of November and is often regarded as the beginning of the festive shopping season. Last year, 141 million US consumers shopped on the day, spending a total of $57.4 billion, with online sales reaching $1.2 billion.

Wikipedia adds the day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it initially was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. It now indicates turning a profit for retailers.
