Juniper adds SSL
Juniper Networks will soon add SSL (secure sockets layer) support to its WAN acceleration gear, optimising the secure protocol over wide-area networks, reports Computerworld UK.
Because it is encrypted, SSL traffic cannot now be optimised by Juniper devices, so traffic reduction over the WAN is less significant than it might be otherwise.
Competitors Riverbed Technology and Blue Coat Systems already have SSL support.
Admin saves power
Technology for reducing the energy consumption of computers running Windows Vista will hit the market today, with a product from power-management software vendor 1E that centralises and automates the PC shutdown process, reports PC World.
The fifth version of 1E`s NightWatchman adds support for Vista and enhances reporting tools to give network administrators greater visibility into power consumption and energy savings. Previously, NightWatchman supported Windows XP and Windows 2000, but not Vista.
On average, NightWatchman saves $50 per PC per year in energy costs, according to London-based 1E.
IPv6 gets backing
R'eseaux IP Europ'eens (RIPE) Network Co-ordination Centre (NCC) believes it`s time to ditch IPv4 in favour of IPv6, reports ars technical.
"Growth and innovation on the Internet depends on the continued availability of IP address space," notes the NCC. "The remaining pool of unallocated IPv4 address space is likely to be fully allocated within two to four years. IPv6 provides the necessary address space for future growth."
When IPv4 was first created, a block of address space was set aside for "future use". Some of that address space remains unused to this day.
