Joomla gets facelift

Software company, Joomla has unveiled version 1.7 of its open source content management system (CMS), reports Computing.co.uk.

Joomla production leadership team member Mark Dexter explains that Joomla will now release new versions on a six-monthly cycle - every January and July, rather than every couple of years.

However, CMS Wire points out long-term support will last for 15 months, starting with the next release - 1.8.

According to Joomla, fixed-delivery cycles will allow organisations to better plan upgrade operations. The move may give Joomla an edge over other CMS competitors with a strong focus on operations planning.

PC World says the platform offers capabilities such as MySQL database connectivity, input filtering, authenticating users, package upgrading, event logging, file system management, access control lists and dozens of others.

On the architecture side, the latest version of Joomla separates its core functionality into a set of libraries that can be used for other types of Web applications. A set of PHP libraries that are the core of Joomla form the basis of what is now called the Joomla Platform.
