iTunes might not rock SA

The partial introduction of the iTunes Store into the South African market has taken place without much fanfare, but has led to speculation that music downloads could be in the offing.

Apple has added more than 40 countries to its Apple iTunes Application Store list, and some believe this is the first step towards SA acquiring its own iTunes Music Store.

The company has made the iTunes Application Store, or The App Store, available to more than 40 countries worldwide, including SA, with speculation suggesting this is the first step towards the country acquiring its own iTunes Music Store.

According to the iTunes Web site, The App Store sells applications such as games and social networks for the Apple iPod Touch and iPhone.

However, Taryn Hyam, spokesman for the Core Group, which distributes Apple products in SA, says the company cannot comment on whether iTunes will make its way to the country.

Vodacom spokesman Mari-Louise Esterhuizen says the iPhone 3G is coming to SA and will be launched at an undisclosed date. However, she did not give any clues as to whether the phone will have access to the iTunes Store - unlike its American counterpart which has access to the iTunes WiFi Music Store as well.

With the costs of producing CDs up by 10%, according to the Recording Industry of SA, digital downloads are seen as the future for the industry.
