There has been no trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) this morning due to a yet-to-be-determined hardware error.
A JSE official has confirmed the bourse was closed for trade this morning after a hardware error surfaced at about 7.25am.
"It relates to our infrastructure, but we're not yet sure what the problem is," said the official, who cannot be named, as he is not an official spokesman. "IT has been troubleshooting the problem, but we don't yet know how long it will take to resolve."
Official spokesmen for the JSE were all in a meeting at the time of publication and could not be reached for comment.
However, the JSE official explained that due to the hardware issue, multicast data could not be disseminated, which meant the bourse could not go live.
"Brokers cannot disseminate to us, so the market is blind."
The official said that at this stage, trading hours would most likely not be extended, but this depended on how long the downtime lasted.
Ferdi Heyneke, portfolio manager at Afrifocus Securities, this morning confirmed no market activity was taking place and brokers could not place pre-orders to go through as soon as trading opened up on the market again.
