Internet Solutions (IS) has released a Cisco tool that aims to allow the CIO to bring online tools into the workplace, securely.

IS said this week it has launched Cisco's WebEx into SA. It is a unified conferencing and content sharing collaboration tool. WebEx combines real-time desktop sharing with phone conferencing, which allows everyone to view the same content during a conference call.

“The partnership between Cisco WebEx and IS addresses the challenges that many CIOs in SA face today, with end-users in the workplace,” said Ismael Hassa, director of WebEx operations for Cisco's emerging markets division. “Whether they want them to or not, people are going to get online tools and bring them into the workplace environment.”

Cisco WebEx offers the ability for a CIO to allow end-users to use online tools at work, but in a way that is as complementary and secure as possible, to ensure the company assets don't become public property, Hassa said.

WebEx also offers collaboration tools, which can eliminate the need for people to travel and meet on site. The user can connect to anyone with an Internet connection, and all other participants can connect to a conference without a subscription.

Training extension

“Other than enabling online meetings, we also see the application of this technology extending into online education and training, the legal profession, as well as enabling call centres to deliver remote support,” said Hayden Lamberti, Application Solutions business unit manager at IS.

WebEx uses a worldwide managed audio network to deliver the voice component of the conferencing functionality, which means each country has a local toll-free or toll number that the meeting participants can dial into.

There are more than 200 000 daily WebEx meetings globally and over 10 million individual participants each month globally.
