iPhoneography is a fast-growing art among Apple fans, with SA hosting its second annual exhibition tomorrow.

Local iPhone photographers ('iPhoneographers') will strut their stuff at the first of two South African iPhoneography 2012 exhibitions tomorrow, at Johannesburg's Sandton-based iStore.

Marc Forrest, well-known tech blogger and founder of the iPhoneography SA exhibition last year, has again partnered with iStore to host this year's event. Unlike last year, however, this year sees two exhibitions - the first in Johannesburg, and a second event in Cape Town, on 23 October.

iPhoneography, an increasingly popular trend among iPhone users, is a digital photographic process using Apple's iPhone camera as the main tool to capture and create photographic images, which can then be edited using different graphics applications on the device. The term became widely used and the concept popular in 2007, when the original iPhone 2G was released with its two-megapixel camera.

With continual improvements to resolution and image quality, as well as proliferation of graphics apps - such as photo-sharing social network app Instagram - more and more professional photographers have ventured into this art form.

iStore CEO Andrew Mundell - who says he encouraged anyone with an iPhone to enter the exhibition - says: "The user-friendly iPhone camera and availability of thousands of photography apps makes it easy for even the most amateur photographer to take great photographs."

Mundell says last year's exhibition saw an exceptional response, prompting the group to invite entries from Johannesburg and Cape Town - as opposed to just Johannesburg - this year. Entrants, who need only be based in SA to submit an entry, had until 27 September to do so for Johannesburg, and until 8 October for Cape Town.

In order for entries to be considered for exhibition, all work had to be the photographer's original work and all images needed to be taken and edited on an iPhone. Each entrant was permitted to submit up to five photographs.

Each exhibition will display the photographic artwork selected by the judges, and be available for purchase at the artist's discretion.

Photographs will be rated by a panel of judges and separate winners will be chosen for each province. Winners will receive a new iPad, while second and third runners up will receive a variety of accessories from iStore.

Forrest says he is "thrilled" to be involved in iPhoneography SA again this year. He says last year's event was popular, generating increased interest in iPhoneography. "We look forward to judging the entries in both Johannesburg and Cape Town and hosting both exhibitions."

Tomorrow's kick-off exhibition is likely to feature prominently in the "Twittersphere". Interested parties can use the hashtag #iPhoneographySA to tweet about or follow the event.
