Apple has released an iOS 6.1.1 update for iPhone 4S users, in response to complaints about poor 3G connectivity, after updating to iOS 6.1.

The iOS 6.1 update was released by Apple for iOS devices on 28 January. Following that, reports emerged from iPhone 4S users that since the software update they were noticing significant battery drain and overheating.

Vodafone UK and 3 Austria also went so far as to warn their iPhone 4S subscribers not to update to iOS 6.1. Vodafone UK said the update resulted in difficulties "connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet".

Apple's release notes say: "This update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S."

As it stands, it does not appear as if the update addresses the battery drain and overheating issues, nor is it available for any other iOS devices. Reports from users on Apple's support forums also suggest the iOS 6.1 problems are not limited to the iPhone 4S.

Apple has not given any indication as yet that the update will be pushed to other iOS users, or if it is working on specific fixes for the other devices.

The iOS 6.1.1 update is available via General > Software Update for iPhone 4S users.
