iPhone 4S set for July release?

A report issued yesterday indicated Apple's fifth-generation iPhone will be released in late July or early August, reveals Digital Trends.

This contradicts earlier reports that it would be unveiled at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off next week.

Technology site Macotakara said the so-called iPhone 4S will feature an 8MP camera and Qualcomm chipset.

Sony to restore PSN this week

Sony plans to restore by this weekend PlayStation Network (PSN) services worldwide, except in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, after being targeted in a massive online attack in April, writes AFP.

The electronics and entertainment giant said users in the Americas and Europe and much of Asia will again be able to buy and download games online, and will also receive “welcome back” packs of services and content.

The company said since being hacked in April, it had “implemented considerable security enhancements to the network infrastructure, as well as conducted testing of the payment process and commerce functions”.

MS to train teenage Xbox hacker

Microsoft has reportedly offered to provide white-hat security training to a 14-year-old hacker who unleashed a phishing attack within the Xbox game Modern Warfare 2 last month, states SC Magazine.

Rather than take legal action against the Dublin teenager, Microsoft Ireland GM Paul Rellis said the company will help “develop his talent for legitimate purposes”.

The teenager, whose name had not been released, unleashed the attack over the Xbox 360 platform that triggered an alert to millions of users. Microsoft issued a service alert to warn Xbox Live users of the threat.

HP expands battery recall

Hewlett-Packard is expanding a voluntary recall of notebook computer batteries due to risk of fire from overheating, reports Reuters.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said that since an initial recall in May 2010 and 2009, HP has received additional reports of overheated and ruptured lithium-ion batteries, leading it to expand its recall to include more models.

The recall relates to 162 600 additional batteries, manufactured in China and imported by Hewlett-Packard.
