Iomega Corporation, a global leader in data protection and security, has announced new lines of network storage products for the home user and the small enterprise that deliver new price-performance standards with easy-to-use networking features for the home, home office and SME networks.
The new line of Iomega Home Network Hard Drives, available in 320GB and 500GB models, resets the benchmark for network storage pricing, making it possible for the first time to share network storage at home for little more than the cost of a standard desktop external hard drive.
For the small enterprise user, Iomega's three new StorCenter models, ranging in storage capacity from 500GB to 1TB, integrate smoothly into small enterprise networks, with features that include Active Directory support and journaling file system, as well as incorporating popular home-network features like media-serving capability and print server capability.
"Today, the most common use for home networks is to enable shared Internet access," says Michelle Kasselman, Key Account Manager for Iomega Corporation in South Africa.
"Families are struggling with how to organise data across multiple PCs. Shared network storage made easy and affordable with Iomega's new Home Network Hard Drive adds the benefit of securely sharing and consolidating photos, music and video over a home family network, as well as increasing storage and backup capacity."
The network capabilities of the new Iomega Home Network Hard Drive are based on 10/100 Ethernet technology, the connectivity standard in today's home networks. With the included Ethernet cable, setting up an Iomega Home Network Hard Drive is as easy as connecting it to an available network port on the home router and running the included, easy-to-use Discovery Tool Home utility for Windows on each PC (for Mac and Linux users on the network, configuration is a simple manual process).
The two models of the new Iomega Home Network Hard Drive feature 7200 RPM SATA-II hard drives with 8MB cache. Once a Home Network Hard Drive is set-up and the network is operating, the device can save files from up to four networked PC or Mac computers for easy file sharing and enjoyment.
The two models of the new Iomega Home Network Hard Drive include a USB 2.0 port for use with a single computer, making the Home Network Hard Drive an external hard drive for incremental storage.
The new Iomega Home Network Drive requires an available 10/100 Ethernet port; a network hub, switch or router is recommended. A DHCP configured network is also recommended.
Iomega's new StorCenter Network Hard Drives are compatible with both Windows and Mac computing environments. The units can be installed and configured in minutes using the included Discovery Tool Pro software; Apple Bonjour support provides equally seamless discovery and configuration capabilities to Mac OS X users.
Once configured, the new Iomega StorCenter Network Hard Drives allow users to access files from any networked PC or Mac for easy file-sharing and print serving.
All three of the new Iomega StorCenter models use 3.5-inch 7200 RPM SATA-II hard drives with an 8MB cache for fast, cost-effective storage. Iomega's 500GB and 750GB StorCenter drives are single-drive products that feature a Gigabit Ethernet connection with jumbo frame support. The top of the line, the 1TB StorCenter Network Hard Drive, is a two-drive product supporting RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring) and JBOD (which treats both drives as a large single drive).
"Iomega is a recognised industry leader in the SME network storage segment, and now we're strengthening our leadership position with the launch of our fourth generation network hard drive line," says Kasselman. "Iomega network hard drive storage products are specifically designed to make it easy and dependable for SMEs and home office users to manage their data across the network, which is increasingly the location for storage products that deliver anywhere, anytime file access.
"Today's new Iomega StorCenter products are cost-effective network hard drives that feature a high performance architecture and superb backup software to keep network data accessible and protected."
All three new StorCenter Network Hard Drive models support advanced network features that give SMEs and home users many of the same file-serving and data security safeguards enjoyed by large enterprises. Journaling file system helps prevent data loss in the event of a power failure.
Active Directory support gives the StorCenter Network Hard Drive the ability to function as a client member in an Active Directory domain, allowing the drive to use the domain users and groups. UPnP AV media server capability allows users to enjoy photos, video, and music throughout the office or the home. Each StorCenter model also has two external USB 2.0 ports for attaching external hard drives or printers, and each drive supports client PCs running Windows, Mac OS, or Linux.
Iomega includes award-winning backup software with its new Home Network Hard Drives and new StorCenter Network Hard Drives, giving users a total solution that includes automated backup of critical files.
For the new Iomega Home Network Hard Drives, two client licences of EMC Retrospect HD backup software are included, allowing home users to set up automated backup schedules or perform immediate backups; create progressive backups that capture only the changes from the previous backup, and much more. Iomega's new StorCenter Network Hard Drives come complete with a copy of EMC Retrospect Express backup and disaster recovery software.
The Iomega Home Network Hard Drives and the Iomega StorCenter Network Hard Drives announced today are compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional; XP Home; XP Professional; XP Professional x64; and Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Also compatible are Mac OS X 10.2.7 or higher and Linux distributions Redhat 9, Mandrake 10, Debian 3.0, Gentoo, and FedoraCore 3.
