Intel SA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Communications (DOC) to provide schools with programmes to facilitate technology integration.
"Intel will provide Intel Teach and Intel Learn programme training without fees to the South African teachers selected by the DOC, who will become master trainers," says Intel in a statement.
Master trainers will be responsible for training teachers in their respective schools, while Intel will train two teachers per DOC-selected school.
According to Intel, the Teach programme helps teachers integrate technology into classrooms and currently trains more than 10 million educators in more than 70 countries.
Videsha Proothveerajh, country manager for Intel SA, says the partnership with the DOC is important in an effort to drive skills development.
"We view Intel Teach along with our many other education initiatives as crucial investments into the development of future innovators, thinkers, scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs and a range of other careers not yet thought of as the needs are still to be unearthed or tabled," says Proothveerajh.
"This is highlighted in the MOU signed between Intel and DOC stating that we aim to enable a holistic education solution, which helps ensure that learners are equipped with 21st century skills, including technology skills and the entrepreneurial skills they require to succeed," she adds.
The Intel Learn programme focuses on technology literacy, problem solving, teamwork and collaboration.
Its curriculum is delivered within an informal education environment such as community technology centres, or presented as an after-school initiative.
Intel says the programme has already developed skills for 1.6 million young people globally.
