IMSI gets Net users up to speed

Continuing to meet PC users' "need for speed" on the Internet, IMSI developer and publisher of business productivity software has announced the release of NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe.

This power-packed suite includes all the features of the best-selling NetAccelerator and more continuing to make web surfing a dramatically faster and more productive experience for all levels of Internet users.

"Some people believe that an Internet accelerator is not necessary if you have a fast modem like a T1, T3, or cable connection," says Monique Stern, product manager for IMSI's NetAccelerator. "In reality, the faster your connection, the better NetAccelerator Version 2 actually works. The suite of products we have bundled into NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe works together to provide users with a faster, more efficient, and more effective browsing experience."

NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe is a real-time Internet accelerator that pre-fetches links while a user browses. The program anticipates a user's next move on the Internet, working in the background to download text and graphic content of desired pages, before the user gets there. While a person is reading a web page, the computer's modem would usually be inactive. With NetAccelerator, this idle time is used to search out and download other links on the same site, as well as a user's most commonly visited sites. NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe software suite works in three distinct ways:

AdsOff is an Internet advertising blocker that is integrated with a program called OnTrack. The two programs work together to create a barrier against the download of ad text, graphics, pop-up windows, and banner ads on the Internet.

"By blocking web site advertising from being downloaded, AdsOff and OnTrack cut down on unwanted downloads that would otherwise hog the users' modem," Stern says. "AdsOff frees up the modem, allowing NetAccelerator to work even harder."

Web Sleuth from Prompt Software helps users gather, organize, analyze, and present the results of online searches effectively and efficiently. The program uses five powerful search engines, including Yahoo! and Alta Vista, to generate neatly cross-indexed results and summary abstracts of all pages found from selected key words and phrases.

Jackhammer works to penetrate busy web sites or FTP servers, operating in the background while users move on to browse other sites. Once a connection is made, Jackhammer opens a separate browser and displays the web page or automatically downloads the requested file.

"Web Sleuth makes the system more efficient and Jackhammer keeps knocking on the door until you get in," adds Stern.

The key features of NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe include:

  • Look-ahead caching, utilizing the built-in caching support from Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Netscape Communicator;

  • Automatic browser recognition;

  • Automatic prioritization of "favorite" web sites based on number of visits and amount of time spent at sites;

  • Automatic updates of most-commonly visited web sites;

  • Optimized for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape Communicator 4.0;

  • Support for Netscape Navigator, Communicator and Internet Explorer on the same machine (including multiple instances);

  • Small installation size for entire software suite.

NetAccelerator Version 2 is not a proxy-based product, eliminating the danger of proxy conflicts when installed with other Internet utilities.

System requirements and availability

NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe requires an IBM-compatible 486 or better, with Windows 95 and NT operating systems, a minimum of 16 MB of RAM, Internet access, Netscape Navigator 3.02, Communicator 4.0, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.2 - 4.0.

NetAccelerator Version 2 Deluxe will be available in February, in computer software stores nationwide, for an estimated street price of R300.00.
