The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is pleased to have successfully registered more than a million additional voters on the voters' roll since the start of its registration drive, says IEC Chairperson Pansy Tlakula.
Tlakula says she would like to thank everyone involved in the campaign, particularly those who were deployed to assist at various registration points across South Africa.
"While there were minor instances of disruption, the overall registration process went without a hitch and that is testament to the planning, dedication and hard work of our teams," says Tlakula.
"I also feel strongly about acknowledging the work that happened behind the scenes.
"Few people are aware that we had a full team of call centre agents, outsourced to technology group Bytes People Solutions (BPS), to handle a variety of queries from across the entire country."
Towards the end of 2013, Bytes People Solutions was awarded the call centre outsourcing tender for both the upcoming national elections as well as the municipal elections in 2016.
"The information we have from BPS indicates that during the recent registration weekend, nearly 37 000 calls were received by the call centre, and 98% of the calls routed to the agents were successfully handled.
"I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the call centre staff who worked tirelessly to make sure that we attended to concerns raised by the public during the registration drive, and were able to direct people to the most convenient locations.
"The registration drive was successful because it was a collaborative effort across the entire organisation as well as with our outside partners," adds Tlakula.
