iBurst commissioned its 100th base station, located in Boksburg, this week, as part of its nationwide infrastructure implementation that began in November 2004.
"iBurst has spent over R200 million to boost coverage for our 25 000 subscribers," says iBurst CEO Thami Mtshali.
Mtshali says iBurst plans to build base stations at an average of two per week until November 2007, when it hopes to have covered 80% of the South African population.
This target compares favourably with iBurst`s Australian counterpart, which aims to cover 75% of the Australian population, he says.
Mtshali reiterates iBurst`s commitment to providing broadband coverage in under-serviced areas: "iBurst provides coverage in high-density disadvantaged areas across many provinces." Coverage areas include Soweto, Alexandra, Sebokeng, parts of Mamelodi, Diepsloot, Eersterust, Gugulethu, Idasvallei, Kyamandi, Langa, Cloetesville and Mangaung.
Mtshali notes the infrastructure investment will be beneficial in 2010. "Overseas visitors will expect easy access to pervasive wireless broadband and SA`s reputation depends on not disappointing them," he says.
