Hulett Aluminium, an operating company in the Tongaat-Hulett group, has selected Dimension Data for the deployment of a wireless local area network (WLAN) solution at its Pietermaritzburg site.
Hulett Aluminium required a wireless solution that would integrate with its existing network and enable it to accurately track and manage its inventory of valuable aluminium ingots. The company experienced performance problems with its previous wireless environment, and engaged Dimension Data to deliver a solution that would enable it to automate and simplify the management and tracking of assets throughout the plant, using handheld barcode scanners.
Prior to upgrading Hulett Aluminium`s wireless environment, Dimension Data conducted a Wireless LAN Surveyor. The Surveyor involved a physical audit of the WLAN, an assessment of the network security infrastructure as well as considerations regarding the implementation of the security architecture.
Dimension Data used the results of the WLAN Surveyor to plan, design and implement a user-friendly solution that would offer guaranteed uptime and performance of Hulett Aluminium`s wireless network.
"Previously, the nature of our wireless network resulted in us having `blind spots` in certain areas and we had to revert to manual tracking of ingots in certain locations.
