Huawei leads carrier-grade VOIP soft switch, media gateway shipments

According to renowned telecom consultant, Dittberner Associates, by the end of the second quarter of 2004, Huawei`s U-SYS VOIP solution is leading global shipment ports and earning 28% of the global market share.

This signifies that Huawei has established its leadership advantage in the next generation network market following its record deployment of 100 million ports of C&C08 digital switches worldwide.

In July 2003 "The Joint Proposal Regarding NGN Carrier Network Service Quality" delivered by Huawei and Chinese operators was adopted by ITU-T. By 22 September 2004, Huawei had submitted 51 documents on NGN to ITU-T. And 44 of them were accepted or partially accepted.

Huawei`s U-SYS VOIP solution has been successfully commercialised in more than 12 countries and regions, including China, Canada, UK, Hong Kong and Brunei. China Satcom has implemented the U-SYS to build its national VOIP long distance network serving 180 cities. By issuing 6 million PPS cards, it managed to achieve a return on investment within three months.

Combining Huawei`s IN solution with the NGN VOIP solution can give VOIP carriers and providers a significant advantage over their competitors. The IN element can provide additional functionality including prepaid Internet, international calling cards as well as powerful reporting tools.

Huawei`s NGN solution offers comprehensive coverage across the core layer, access layer and service layer as well as intelligent terminals. Meanwhile, it is capable of supporting the construction of 3G core networks and providing a full series of 40 more gateways, including access gateways, trunk gateways, signalling gateways and 3G video gateways. In addition, it offers sound solutions supporting enterprise multimedia collaboration and good interoperability with diverse communication networks of leading telecoms operators in different countries.

Bertrand Bidaud, Senior VP of Gartner, commented: "As NGN can cost-effectively enable the convergence of multiple service networks, cut down operating costs and deliver more value-added services, NGN is getting recognised by more and more carriers. Year 2004-2007 would be crucial for global NGN build-out. By 2007, the construction proportion of traditional switches and NG soft switches would be 1:1, bringing great business opportunities for equipment vendors."

Huawei Technologies, which grew more than 300% in NGN last year, grabbed the industry`s attention for its pre-eminent performance in this field. As NGN commercialisation is becoming more and more mature, the next-step development roadmap should be focused on service innovation and carrier-grade QoS.

To date, Huawei has deployed more than 70 sets of soft switch commercial or trial networks for more than 20 carriers in over 12 countries worldwide. And, Huawei has launched its commercial solutions in IP bearer network QoS, and enterprise unified communications, sparing no efforts in driving NGN industry to be further developed.

"Huawei has benefited from joining forces with customers to drive innovation and forge win-win partnerships. Working with customers in this way has deepened our understanding of IP networking. In the NGN area, we have fostered good partnerships with worldwide operators, cooperating extensively on network planning and service development to standard compliance," said Xu Wenwei, executive vice-president of Huawei Technologies.

Chinese companies have been pioneering the development of NGN. Currently, the R&D team of Huawei`s U-SYS NGN solution employs more than 1 400 professionals, with business network development experience in nearly 30 markets.
