HP unveils sleek HP Jornada 540

Hewlett-Packard Company has unveiled the stylish and slim HP Jornada 540 Series Pocket PCs at the Microsoft(R) Pocket PC launch event here at Grand Central Station.

With its sleek design and functionality, the HP Jornada 540 series gives users what they`re looking for in a Pocket PC beyond PIM - fast and easy synchronisation to their desktop PCs, access to e-mail and the Internet, expandability for wireless connectivity, and software applications for making free time fun.

The HP Jornada 540 series comes complete with everything users need to get started. Included in-box are a travel charger, USB cradle and a full suite of Microsoft Pocket PC applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Money, Internet Explorer, Windows(R) Media Player (supports MP3 and WMA formats), eBook Reader, and a desktop version of Microsoft Outlook 2000.

"Our customers want to do more than just calendar and contact management," said Thierry Boulanger, HP PC product marketing manager. "The new HP Jornada 540 Series colour Pocket PCs embody Microsoft`s Pocket PC software suite and support rich media applications such as imaging, audio and e-books in a compact, stylish, expandable and communications-ready device."

Down to Business

As an added bonus, HP has included an exceptional collection of productivity and communication software including AOL Mail and Yahoo! Messenger for anytime, anywhere communication; HP`s exclusive home menu and task switcher; PeaceMaker for exchanging contacts with Palm users via infrared; and Landware`s OmniSolve Calculator. Built-in security enhancements include hardware serialisation and password administration.

The Power to Stay In Touch, Get Online

Users can connect the HP Jornada 540 series colour Pocket PCs wirelessly via selected mobile phones using Socket Communications` Digital Phone Cards for Internet access, e-mail, short message service and remote access to corporate servers. HP`s connection advisor utility on the HP Jornada Web site helps customers choose the correct wireless solution for their needs and provides links to hardware purchasing information.

In the 2nd half of 2000, HP will introduce a CompactFlash Type I Bluetooth module that will enable wireless access to the Internet via cellular phones and connectivity to a range of other Bluetooth-enabled devices such as notebook computers and printers. Wireless accessories for CDPD and GSM/GPRS networks will also be available in this timeframe. Future plans for the HP Jornada 540 series include wireless accessories for CDPD and GSM/GPRS networks and a CompactFlash Type I Bluetooth module to enable wireless access to the Internet via cellular phones and connectivity to other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Wireless accessories for CDPD and GSM/GPRS networks will also be available in this timeframe.

Making Free Time Fun

To accompany daily commutes, workouts, or just for fun, HP also has included Image Expert CE for viewing, editing and sharing digital images and ZIOGolf for a virtual game on the green. Two desktop applications, MusicMatch Jukebox for recording CDs into MP3/WMA formats and AudibleManager for managing audio books also are included in the box.

The HP Jornada 540 and 545 come with 16MB of RAM; the HP Jornada 548 has 32MB of RAM. All three products have a 240 x 320 pixel brilliant 65,536 colour display, an industry-standard Compact Flash Type 1 slot, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that will take the average user through two weeks of use.
