HP NetServer systems to support new Pentium II Xeon processor-based systems

Mission-critical NetServer Solution Builds on HP`s Market Leadership in Enterprise Computing

Johannesburg, 29 Jun 1998

Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will continue to refresh the HP NetServer L series product family by adding a new high-end HP NetServer system with the new Intel Pentium II Xeon processor.

This strategy allows HP NetServer systems to deliver the increased scalability and performance required by today`s computer-intensive applications. The first Pentium II Xeon processor-based system will be delivered as part of the overall enterprise NetServer system strategy. The new addition to the HP NetServer L Series has been optimised for data-centre environments and will deliver customers a highly available, highly scalable solution for enterprise environments.

"HP is dedicated to providing customers with industry-leading, comprehensive enterprise solutions based on the latest technology available," said Thierry Boulanger, marketing manager, PCs and networking. "In addition, HP`s success in the enterprise market segment is largely the result of our ability to bring our long-standing HP-UX expertise to bear on our Intel processor-based enterprise solutions."

The new HP NetServer system will be one component of HP`s overall enterprise solution. The new solution, targeted at enterprise environments running mission-critical applications, will be ideal for customers needing high availability, scalability and advanced remote-management capabilities. Expanding on HP`s 25 years of enterprise experience, the new solution will offer the following advantages:

  • leading-edge technology, with support from the Intel Pentium II Xeon processor in a highly dense, rack-optimised form factor;
  • increased capacity, flexibility and availability through advanced storage and backup technologies;
  • world-class service and support, including Mission Critical Support Services for Windows NT; and
  • industry-leading enterprise-management solutions with HP OpenView ManageX and HP TopTools for Servers.

Customers will be able to purchase current NetServer LX systems and upgrade to the new Pentium II Xeon processor-based NetServer system when it is available in volume. The HP NetServer LX system upgrade programme ensures that customers can upgrade easily to the new Pentium II Xeon processor-based system or to an Intel Merced processor-based NetServer system as soon as they are available.

"We are pleased to have HP`s support of the Pentium II Xeon processor in the new HP NetServer system," said Tom MacDonald, marketing director of Intel`s Enterprise Server Group. "We plan to continue to work with HP to bring new levels of value, performance and flexibility to growing businesses."

The complete family of HP NetServer systems consists of two distinct lines of PC servers. The HP NetServer L Series systems are designed as enterprise-application, workgroup or departmental servers. The HP NetServer E Series systems are the first line of servers designed for small- and medium-sized businesses. All HP NetServer systems come equipped with HP TopTools for Servers management software, and with HP NetServer Navigator, featuring easy-to-use tools to configure, install and manage the servers.

HP is the official information-technology hardware and maintenance supplier to the 1998 World Cup soccer tournament.
