HP, the Ugandan government and Nepad e-Africa Commission have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), to formalise Uganda`s participation in the Nepad e-schools demonstration project.
The signing took place at HP`s offices in Rivonia this morning.
The e-schools project aims to equip African schools with appropriate information and communications technology (ICT).
The 'demos` will be implemented over the next 18 months, with the targets for rolling out the programme set at five years for secondary schools and 10 years for primary schools.
For the past two days delegates have attended a Nepad e-schools demo launch preparatory workshop, discussing a launch strategy of the initiative in each country, and other issues related to Society Partnership for Africa`s Development.
The outcome of the workshop is expected be a plan for the roll-out of the e-school activities, responsibilities of the country liaison persons, and a monitoring and evaluation strategy for the project.
"It`s not going to be an easy road," says Uganda liaison person Soul Kaye, although he notes that the partnership between the private and public sector will help the project meet its intended targets.
"The Ugandan education system is slowly moving forward, especially utilising ICT to connect the e-schools network and the Internet. This project will definitely improve education in our country and throughout the African continent."
