HP knocks NetServer price down, commits to XSP market

Johannesburg, 13 Mar 2001

To provide an even more price- and power-competitive solution for the likes of service providers and companies on IT consolidation drives, HP South Africa has slashed 20 per cent from the price of its new Netserver PC server range.

The price reduction applies to the company`s LP1000r solution - one of two `high-density`, `ultra-thin` servers launched in January this year as part of HP`s network and service provider offering. When the new LP 2000r ships in April it will have what HP says is a very competitive price point.

The HP NetServer LP 1000r system is a 1U (1.75-inch) form factor solution that allows up to 41 servers in a two metre rack. It offers a cost-effective platform for web hosting and infrastructure applications such as proxy, caching, access, DNS, firewall and load-balancing, as well as being a dedicated application server. The HP NetServer LP 2000r system features a 2U form factor and is pitched as a quality solution for traffic-intensive applications such as web/application hosting, e-commerce, messaging and collaboration, and server-based computing applications.

Speaking on the motivation for the move Andrew Fletcher, market development manager at HP South Africa, says the intention is to position HP even more competitively in the XSP server market.

"Our solutions weigh in as more cost-effective than some of the other major vendors out there; this news solidifies that position," he says, adding that HP`s channel already benefits from the new pricing and will subsequently be able to pass on the 20 per cent reduction to customers.

"We expect significant NetServer shipment to be generated through our broad channel base. Areas of good potential are the growing ASP and ISP markets, as well as companies which are currently consolidating their IT infrastructures and searching for powerful PC servers with a small footprint."
