In its sixth year, ITWeb`s online salary survey of South African IT industry workers ran for three weeks between 26 February and 19 March 2004, both on ITWeb and its online job search service, CareerWeb. A total of 3 112 usable responses were captured.

The questionnaire was the same as last year. However, as the sample in this type of survey is not controlled, it is important to note that comparisons with last year`s data are given for reference purposes only.

"This year, the skills level of respondents is generally higher than last year, resulting in higher average salaries reported across the board," says Ranka Jovanovic, IT Salary Survey project manager. "Thus the data for 2004 in comparison with the 2003 data often exceeds the average 6% to 8% salary increase reported this year. This should not be interpreted as an indication of increased salaries in the IT industry, but rather as an increase in the reported salaries of the sample."

* Benchmarking was conducted on the basis of job title, with no job matching beyond the job titles and no grading to verify the job match.
* The data in this report gives an indication of the range of salaries paid per job level and job function, and gives an indication of what is being paid per job function.
It is critical to note that the data reported gives an indication of reported salaries of the sample, rather than reported salaries of the IT industry.

The Web-enabled survey database was designed and developed by ITWeb`s technology director Sinisa Jovanovic, who also conducted the preliminary data cleaning, the cross-queries and database analysis.

Specialist remuneration consultancy 21st Century Business & Pay Solutions was contracted to conduct an analysis of the remuneration data submitted. Details are presented in the foldout section at the end of this report.
