A Johannesburg-based company is providing a series of Internet security training courses aimed at drawing attention to the vulnerability of corporate IT systems.

IS Digital says the courses were developed in response to the large number of requests the company received for training during the Futurex 2005 exhibition last month.

"Judging by the demand, this is clearly something that is necessary, and we found that many people in SA still tend to put information security on the backburner, as was seen with last month`s phishing attack on several local banks," says IS Digital MD Barry Cribb.

Cribb maintains that many businesses` IT divisions feel safe with standard security measures, such as firewalls and patching, but security flaws have recently shifted to application-layer level.

"What we are teaching is not rocket science, but organisations have to be aware that threats can slip through their security systems."

The company is offering three courses: Internet Security Fundamentals, Internet Security Advanced, and Intrusion Detection and Prevention.

"These courses are specifically designed for IT managers, information security managers, network or systems administrators, project managers, team leaders, software testers and all other professionals directly or indirectly involved with information security."

Cribb explains that the intensive and hands-on two- and three-day courses will make participants familiar with network and systems protection techniques, enabling better design of secure systems.

"I don`t believe that South African organisations are particularly more vulnerable than the rest of the world, but there is certainly a need for greater awareness."
