Government has called for expressions of interest to acquire the 80.4 million MTN shares held by Transnet and the Transnet M-Cell Trust.
The public enterprises department published a notice in weekend newspapers saying Transnet remains committed to government`s policy to dispose of Transnet`s non-core interests in various sectors.
The department has invited interested parties, whether individually or as part of a consortium, to submit non-binding expressions of interest, which will be reviewed as part of a short-listing process.
It says government and Transnet reserve the right not to short-list any interested party. They also reserve the right "to negotiate and enter into any transaction of any nature whatsoever, whether with an interested party or a short-listed party, or any person who was not an interested party or a short-listed party".
Interested parties will be required to outline their black empowerment credentials, if any, and also describe the terms and conditions under which they wish to acquire the shares, including how they will finance the acquisition.
The deadline for submissions is 17 October.
MTN`s share was trading at R17.29 on the JSE this morning, down 6c from Friday`s close.
