The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says it has recorded the highest number of submitted applications since the inception of its online admissions system in 2016.

This is despite the technical glitches at the start of the 2023 online admissions cycle, notes the GDE.

According to the GDE, a total of 764 062 applications were submitted and processed for both grades one and eight. Out of these, the department has to place a total of 332 477 learners (157 697 grade one and 174 780 grade eight), it reveals.

The department will today begin the placement process of learners in their respective schools until 30 November.

The placement offers, which must be accepted within seven school days, will be sent to parents via SMS, says the GDE.

When a placement offer is received, applicant parents should log in to their profile on the GDE admissions site to accept the offer as final, or accept it while they await other offers.

“SMSes will be sent out on a continual basis until the end of the placement period on 30 November 2022. This means that not all applicants will receive an SMS on the first day of the placement period, but they must expect an SMS anytime between 3 October and 30 November 2022.

“If parents and guardians have not received an SMS, they don’t need to panic as they are welcome to use their credentials to log on to gdeadmissions.gov.za and check whether they have received an offer or not.

“In the event an SMS states that your child has been placed at a certain school, this will be regarded as successful placement to the mentioned school.

“There will be no need for a parent or guardian to access the system to accept an offer in that regard, because the child would be placed at the mentioned school.”

The provincial education department emphasises that the criteria used for the placement process is based on the learner’s home address within the school’s feeder zone, siblings at a school, work address within school’s feeder zone, home address within 30km radius and home address beyond 30km radius.

It adds that placement is also determined by the capacity of each school. “When schools reach full capacity, applicants will be offered placement offers from schools with available space.”
