GPS and fitness accessory maker Garmin has once again fallen victim to a cyber attack.

The company has announced it was a victim of a cyber attack that encrypted some of its systems on 23 July.

“As a result, many of our online services were interrupted, including Web site functions, customer support, customer-facing applications and company communications. We immediately began to assess the nature of the attack and started remediation.”

In September last year, Garmin SA was hacked, leaving customers’ credit card information at the mercy of cyber criminals.

At that time, the GPS and fitness accessory maker said the compromised data was limited to Garmin’s South Africa site, and contained payment information, including the number, expiration date and CCV code for payment cards along with first and last names, physical addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

In the latest hack, Garmin now says it has no indication that any customer data, including payment information from Garmin Pay, was accessed, lost or stolen.

Additionally, it says, the functionality of Garmin products was not affected, other than the ability to access online services.

According to Garmin, affected systems are being restored and it expects to return to normal operation over the next few days.

“We do not expect any material impact to our operations or financial results because of this outage. As our affected systems are restored, we expect some delays as the backlog of information is being processed.

“We are grateful for our customers’ patience and understanding during this incident and look forward to continuing to provide the exceptional customer service and support that has been our hallmark and tradition.”
