Fujitsu Siemens Computers upgrades Wendon Academy`s computer centre

Johannesburg, 09 Nov 2005

Fujitsu Siemens Computers, together with IT4Africa and Bytes Technology Group, recently upgraded the entire computer media centre at Durban-based school, the Wendon Academy.

The Wendon Academy is a school that caters specifically for children who have learning disabilities.

"Our aim is to develop happy, thinking, caring learners who will be equipped with the necessary life-skills to cope as balanced and confident individuals," says Wendy Hicks, Managing Director of Wendon Academy. "Wendon Academy is where your children come to understand that each person is unique.

"We seek to offer an effective alternative - not all children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD have learning difficulties, but many do. As a result, they seldom flourish in the mainstream schooling system."

Bytes Technology group made IT4Africa aware of the school`s computer requirements, and it in turn approached Fujitsu Siemens Computers for assistance.

When it was made aware of the academy`s need for new computer systems to replace ageing, unreliable and faulty computers, Europe`s leading IT provider immediately offered to assist.

"Computers play a vital role in education and in every facet of modern society," says Mark Wilson, Managing Director of Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "We have always focused on assisting with education projects where possible, as we understand the importance of computer skills in the information age. The work done by Wendon Academy is so well-structured and meaningful that when the request for assistance came, we jumped at the chance."

Wendon Academy offers an effective alternative to the mainstream schooling system, addressing both educational and emotional needs. Catering for a maximum of 50 children with classes limited to 10 learners per class, the academy follows the National Curriculum, placing children in classes best suited to their individual learning capabilities. The child can then progress through the grading system at a pace best suited to his/her capability.

The school works on building the self-confidence of the learner and aims to develop a sense of self-worth and confidence to equip the individual for any chosen career path. The overall curriculum sees learners exposed to a comprehensive range of life-skills including academic, cooking, sports, arts and music, woodworking and mechanics, and computers.

The academy now has 12 Fujitsu Siemens Computers SCENIC Edition Desktop Computers, bringing the computer centre up-to-date with the most modern technology and ensuring the academy can offer learners state-of-the-art computer learning facilities.
