Following a regional judging session in Huawei’s Apps Up developer contest, four South African apps have been shortlisted for the competition’s global judging.
The apps, My Pregnancy Journey, Slug Hunter, Gauntlet and Load Shedding Notifier will represent the country in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional final.
- My Pregnancy Journey is an educational pregnancy app aiming to empower women with everything they need to know about pregnancy health and parenting. The app focuses on Africa and the unique challenges African women face during pregnancy, providing them with a number of resources.
- Slug Hunter is a space game, which sees you play as protagonist Kyle, a geologist working at Facility 7 on Mars. However, the facility has become overrun with man-eating space slugs, and it is up to you to evade and eliminate them in order to make it safely back to earth.
- Gauntlet is a retro gaming app rooted in 80s popular culture. Players take control of a super jet on a mission to destroy evil alien invaders. With fast-paced action, players will need quick reflexes to accomplish the tagline of the game, which is “be the hero that mankind needs”.
- Load Shedding Notifier ensures you are not left in the dark unexpectedly due to load-shedding. The app monitors Eskom’s current load-shedding schedule in real-time and notifies the user if their electricity is scheduled to go off. It also includes configurable alerts, configuration for multiple areas and power grid status monitoring.
The South African developers of these four apps stand a chance to win a share of $1 million. Public voting of the 20 shortlisted regional apps, as well as the finalists from the other global regions, took place between 5-19 November.
The winners of the global competition will be announced in December.
