Rapid adoption of mobile devices has quickly changed the business landscape for managed service providers. Big improvements in the processing power of smartphones and tablets, coupled with a universe of attractive apps, have fuelled a rapid shift in network traffic from traditional PCs and desktops to mobile devices.
Not surprisingly, a growing number of employees of small and medium-sized businesses are pushing their employers for the right to use their personal mobile devices to remotely access the corporate network and enterprise content. This trend - bring your own device (BYOD) - has quickly gained momentum around the world.
Some businesses are responding with a COPE strategy - corporate owned, personally enabled. Others are implementing a more flexible BYOD policy. A recent survey by Forrester Research revealed that 54% of firms are implementing a BYOD programme for smartphones and tablets. Sixty percent of these firms indicated that they would be increasing their central budget to include support, access, and apps for these end-user devices.
