Fitbit gives wearables a makeover

Fitbit is trying to make fitness trackers more fashionable with its new wearable, the Fitbit Alta, which features interchangeable bands.

The Alta has a rectangular stainless steel face that once tapped features a red OLED display. The display can be used to view step count, distance, calories burned, active minutes and the time.

The stainless steel face is meant to seamlessly blend with the chosen strap, to look like jewellery. Straps will be available in black, blue, teal or plum. Leather, steel and gold options will follow shortly.

Alta incorporates Fitbit's new SmartTrack technology, which automatically detects exercise. It recognises and records continuous movement activities, including walking, running or outdoor biking and sports. It also has a 'remember to move' function which will tell the user if they have remained stationary for too long.

However, the fitness tracker does not come equipped with a heart-rate monitor or GPS.

It features a battery life of up to five days on a single charge and is compatible with more than 200 Android, iOS and Windows devices.

Fitbit Alta will be available in the US from March and in April everywhere else. Prices for the South African market have not been released yet, but the Alta will cost $130 (R2 065) in the US.
