FIFA Street 2 is a major improvement on the original, which received lukewarm reviews. This I attribute to it being developed as sports game, not a plain soccer game.
That the sequel offers much more than the original FIFA Street did, in terms of features, makes it a "must have".
From the onset, the player faces much more taunts, ball-juggling tricks and improved gamebreakers. For better play, the PSP version offers an end-to-end camera view.
I must admit, I didn`t like that matches in the game are viewed from a sideline perspective. One feels like a spectator, rather than a player. I guess this is the case with all third-person games.
The main objective is to be the first to score a certain number of goals, rather than playing against time - a downer if your opponent or the CPU catches you on your off day.
Added to this, the game`s format will force the player to concentrate more on performing tricks in order get past opposing players. Tricks increase chances of scoring; stringing together enough combos activates gamebreaker shots.
For lazy players, scoring is possible by avoiding all contact with opponents, performing tricks along the way and building up enough charge for a gamebreaker shot. This, however, takes away the challenge.
On the defence side, the PSP version gives an opportunity to counteract opponents` trick-moves by hitting a specific button when it flashes up on the screen. This makes it less of a game of guesswork.
The rule-the-street career mode is also quite nifty. It allows a player to be created and customised by choosing specific physical traits, clothing and other attributes.
After that, seven players can be selected for the squad and although these players can`t be substituted into any of the four-aside games, they can be changed between matches.
When a timeout is needed, the mini-games provide some relief via variety.
After winning enough career games and earning enough skill bills (which can be spent on improving players), the fun begins. Tournaments can be entered and global locations are unlocked.
The game comes packed with an impressive 38 song soundtrack, which is a major addition to the entertainment value of the game.
Overall the game flows well and has impressive visuals. The gameplay is enjoyable too. I would comfortably give it a kicking 7/10.
