EOH pledges time to make a difference at Monde Primary School, in Katlehong

Mandela Day, 18 July 2011, is a call to action for people everywhere to make the world a better place, one small step at a time. In celebration, listed IT solutions provider EOH will rally to fulfil the wish list of Monde Primary School, in Katlehong.

One of 13 schools located in the south of Johannesburg, Monde Primary School will also benefit from EOH's existing and ongoing numeracy and natural science programme led by the Maths Centre.

On Friday, 15 July 2011, 80 staff members from EOH arrived in buses at Monde Primary School, dressed in 'work' clothes and armed with paintbrushes and paint. “We urged our staff to give 67 minutes of their time to change the world for the better, symbolising the 67 years that Nelson Mandela has spent serving the South African community. We have upgraded nine classrooms at the school with a fresh coat of paint, that not only uplifts the school but has done wonders for our staff in terms of fostering a spirit of giving,” says Pumeza Bam, HR Director of EOH.

A host of companies have joined the venture by offering labour and funds to aid in the endeavour. As part of Watcon Construction's outreach programme, the company provided expertise in the form of labourers who have donated their time and skills to repair the classrooms, ranging from filling gaps in the walls, to smoothing out the ceilings, painting doorframes and replacing sections of the vinyl flooring.

Ambius plants provided 15 plants to be used in the classrooms and administrative building, while Rentokill offered their expert skills to deep-clean the toilet facilities at the school. SubLogic Data and Quantum Furnishers have both donated funds towards the project.

“It has been an extraordinary day and we have all walked away feeling that we have done something good in the world. We definitely plan to make this an ongoing project, as it adds a great deal of value to our education system and the community at large that truly epitomises the meaning behind Nelson Mandela day,” concludes Bam.
