Mortal Kombat - Shaolin Monks is a great game, the enjoyment of which is enhanced by being a true Mortal Kombat fan.
Before I get into the story, I must commend the developers on making an impressive one-on-one battle engine, which is great for both single and multi-players battles.
Even some of the best things are flawed, however, and the graphics in this game needed much more work. I don`t think the developers were in that much of a hurry to get this game out that they should have rushed the graphics phase.
Another negative is the fight venues have not been improved on much from previous releases, which makes them boring, thus detracting from the excitement of the fighting sequences.
In this part of the game, the player/ players have a choice of the two pre-unlocked players (Lui Kang and Kung Lao). Mortal Kombat fans will discover that some of the moves and fatalities these characters possess are quite different from other games, which is not to say they are not good.
Back to some good news: unlocking other players is relatively easy for the average gamer, especially those familiar with Mortal Kombat.
The combat mode, whether single- or multi-player provides for hours of fun and, besides a few flaws, will leave any lover of arcade games satisfied.
The story mode is equally fun and takes off from where the previous Mortal Kombat release left off. The player is trapped on the island where the Mortal Kombat tournament takes place, everything is falling apart and the mission is to fight out of many chambers and escape the island.
Without giving away too much, in this mode, one has to prepare to do plenty of button pushing to advance from stage to stage. This is not exactly easy, especially for beginners and intermediate level players.
The chambers are full of vicious foes and unexpected surprises lurk around every corner. Just like the battle mode, there are plenty of environmental dangers that one has to look out for in order to survive.
One thing I found odd was that when it comes to the freeing of characters, the combat and story modes are in no way connected, if you free someone in one mode, that does not apply to the other.
True Mortal Kombat fans, this game is for you. Being one myself, I had to give it a very impressive 8/10.
