EMC Corporation and Fujitsu Siemens Computers have demonstrated the global fail-over and recovery of a live SAP ERP application between two data centres located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and Cork, Ireland.
Within minutes after the intentional failure in Hopkinton, the recovery location 3 000 miles away in Cork was running and fully processing SAP transactions.
"The first-of-its-kind integrated fail over and recovery demonstration of a production application over transatlantic distances showcased a new, integrated global recovery solution," says Alex Robertson, Technology Solutions Group Manager, EMC SA.
The solution comprises EMC`s high-performance SRDF/Asynchronous (SRDF/A) remote replication software, Symmetrix DMX GigE multi-protocol channel directors and Fujitsu Siemens Computers` full-featured PRIMECLUSTER product suite for high availability.
Available from EMC and Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the solution allows companies to make more efficient use of existing information and communication infrastructures.
"The goal is to enable customers to freely access information and services anywhere and at any time by providing products, services and solutions," says Elmor van Staden, product manager at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "With this demonstration we have proved that achieving global recovery - whether it`s across the country or across continents - is a reality.
"Working with EMC and using standard products such as SRDF/A and PRIMECLUSTER offers new opportunities for global enterprises to consolidate locations and infrastructures to meet their ever-changing business requirements," Van Staden adds.
SRDF/A, an extended-distance replication software, creates and maintains a recoverable and restartable copy of critical data over any distance with no host application impact. The high-availability services of PRIMECLUSTER software manage the geographically distributed cluster, participating applications and system components, while monitoring the cluster "heartbeat" to protect against primary site failure.
"Together, SRDF/A and PRIMECLUSTER software ensure a successful, automated and controlled fail over in support of continuous business operations," says Robertson.
"Our customers know that when it comes to business continuity, distance matters. This demonstration of SRDF/A proves that integrated, long-distance recovery solutions are practical, affordable and deployable today," he concludes.
