Increased automation within the data centre is crucial for businesses to be able to deal with issues including big data and the need for greater efficiency at a lower cost.
This is one of the observations made by Paul Maritz, CEO of VMware, during his keynote address at EMC World, in Las Vegas.
According to Maritz, some of the current challenges in the data centre space include the need to achieve lower costs and deliver greater efficiency in the IT space.
Maritz argued that the explosion in data and the growth of virtualisation has resulted in a need for more efficient server management tools.
He suggested that higher levels of automation are needed. For example, he said EMC customer research found that automated diagnostic platforms to report errors were found to dramatically speed up the process of detecting and resolving issues.
According to Maritz, by using automated management tools, Google is able to operate with one administrator for every 1 000 virtual servers.
“[This] is the best metric of what has to happen in the data centre,” added Maritz.
Finally, Maritz suggested that when management functions can be automated within the data centre, the use of virtualisation technologies will expand even further.
