The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) has donated a fully-furnished ICT lab to the newly-opened OR Tambo Technical High School.
The South African government has declared October OR Tambo month in memory of the legacy of the struggle icon. The DCDT’s donation is in line with these commemorations.
The technical high school, which was officially opened on Monday, is located in Nkantolo Village in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, where struggle icon OR Tambo was born.
According to the Eastern Cape provincial government, the R40 million school was built through a public-private partnership, and has 430 pupils and 14 teachers.
The school features a library, an admin block, 15 classrooms and a multi-purpose classroom, and offers maths and science as main subjects.
Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams’s department donated 30 laptops and a printer to set up the school’s cyber lab.
Commenting on the donation, Ndabeni-Abrahams said it is a fulfilment of a mandate given to her department by president Cyril Ramaphosa to digitise society, adding that it's also OR Tambo's legacy.
Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane noted that opening the school is the realisation of OR Tambo's dream, as he wished for a maths and science school in Nkantolo Village to provide quality education for children from rural communities.
Mabuyane is of the view the school will contribute to building the country's economy.
