The second annual maker convention will take place in Durban on 29 and 30 October, at the Wave House in the Gateway Theatre of Shopping centre in Umhlanga.

A maker is a person who actively takes part in the maker movement: a post-consumerism lifestyle, where people make things themselves instead of buying them off shelves.

MakerCon aims to show how accessible information, technology and resources are to make things. It will showcase what it is possible to make instead of buying, including 3D printing, crafts, custom furniture, robots and drones.

The MakerSpace, a Durban maker community, hosts the event.

Activities over the weekend include drone racing, interactive art, a science fair and experimental music using technology. There will also be a series of workshops to attend and a hackathon.

Over 4 000 visitors are expected, with more than 40 exhibitors displaying their 'home-made' products.

Tickets can be bought online or at the event, at R30 for children and R50 for adults. To take part in the hackathon, it will cost R100 if the maker brings their own kit. It will cost R400 to take part in the hackathon and get a kit provided, including an Arduino and components. Hackathon tickets include entrance to the event.

Last year, the conference took place at the MakerSpace on Station Drive in Durban. Attendees were able to learn about 3D printing and laser cutting, as well as see what other makers had made. Below is a video of the first event.
