Dubai Roads and Transport Authority selects Nortel for advanced converged network solution

New infrastructure improves communications and reduces costs

Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), a newly established government authority in Dubai, has selected Nortel and its local partner Beta Information Technology to implement a new converged network which provides innovative, practical convergence solutions and collaborative technologies that enhance productivity, flexibility and mobility.

Nortel`s end-to-end solution also allows RTA to deploy a high performance infrastructure that guarantees quality and customer service to citizens, corporations and other government institutions in the Emirates.

"As a new authority in charge of transportation in Dubai we wanted to install a highly sophisticated infrastructure that would maximise network manageability, reliability, mobility and security in our environment. Nortel was able to provide us with a simple, high performance, cost-effective solution that helps meet our needs," said Abdulla Al Madani, CEO, Corporate Support Services, RTA.

"We are committed to providing government and public sector institutions like Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai with intelligent and flexible communication systems that makes easier for citizens to access them," said Ramin Attari, vice-president, Nortel Middle East. "Nortel has a proven track in providing governments secure, end-to-end network solutions that promote growth, enhance day-to-day operational processes, help maximising employee productivity and leverage standards of customer servicing."

Nortel`s solution includes Ethernet Routing Switches (ERS) 8600s connected to ERS 5520 forming a resilient network which allows RTA to significantly increase the number of staff working on its site. The ERS 8600 is a resilient, intelligent, secure solution that allows corporate networks to provide a truly unified communications network. Resiliency helps ensure network resources are always available, intelligence allocates bandwidth and premium performance to those applications that need it the most. Security, on the other hand, helps ensure that information travelling across the network remains secure and unaltered.

Nortel`s technology encompass industry-leading features such as Split Multi-Link Trunking Support (SMLT) and Routed Split Multi-Link Trunking Support (R-SMLT) which provide increased bandwidth and resilient connections, hence ensuring converged applications are operating effectively throughout the network while crippling network disruptions and delays.

As part of Nortel`s solution, the Communication Server 1000E (CS100E) with WLAN 2300 provides RTA the mobility and flexibility their business requires. CS1000E transforms the way users communicate, it provides multimedia and collaborative applications that enhance communications, making users more productive and enabling the virtual enterprise.

Nortel`s WLAN 2300 enables RTA to deploy widespread wireless coverage, IP telephony and converged multimedia applications. It combines the latest industry standards with a centralised architecture and advanced features to create a secure, cost-effective and highly scalable WLAN infrastructure.
