DSTV viewers with high-definition (HD) ready decoders and television will be able to view HD content for the first time as of 24 August.

MNet has announced that it will be providing both local and international content on a special DSTV station as of that date, with some shows simulcast on other channels.

The channel will be a mix of series, movies, sporting action and once-off specials, such as music concerts. Some of the programming - mainly movies, series and specials - will be available in surround sound.

MultiChoice has also launched its first HD personal video recorded (PVR) decoder.

Viewers will need both an HD PVR decoder and an HD-ready television set to view HD content from MultiChoice.

The Beijing Olympic Games will be the first to broadcast in HD format at the beginning of August.

Multichoice will provide free software to HD PVR decoders without viewers having to do anything to download it.

The HD PVR decoder will launch at a price of R2 499.
