Disrupting physical security information management

Moving beyond facial and number plate recognition.

Since the dawn of the fourth industrial revolution, we have been propelled forward through the development and advances of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things (IOT), robotics, virtual reality (VR) and decision insights through business Intelligence. Businesses and professionals are having to adjust their approach at an exponential rate, with new opportunities, challenges and developments materialising in the business landscape at an ever-accelerating pace.

“Artificial intelligence is radically changing the way we live, work, play and engage our physical world. No doubt artificial intelligence will have a profound impact in every industry, and even more so in the physical security services. Visual artificial intelligence is already in use across the globe, gathering astronomical volumes of data while deep learning algorithms analyses events in real-time. What we have not seen locally is the integration of deep learning visual technologies into business processes to enable a real-time informed response, and in doing so, reduce the risk to property, assets, people, productivity and profit loss,” says Theo Bensch, Ntsika Chief Executive Officer.

Three leaders in AI security tech

Three leading providers, namely, Ntsika Holdings, Geutebrück and Online Intelligence, have come together to provide industry-leading solutions to current day challenges. Leveraging on powerful artificial intelligence capabilities and situational event and incident response, the integration of these technologies aims to address a broad range of themes relevant today. The solution transforms physical security information systems from a traditionally reactive-based response system to an intelligent proactive response solution.

How COVID-19 has pushed companies to adopt model management systems

Most recently, the response to the global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that without a coherent and integrated approach to managing everyday activities and responsibilities, companies can easily be overwhelmed and left wanting, forced to spend excessive time and effort on navigating the regulatory responsibilities and operational activities instead of being able to focus on their core purpose, that of generating a sustained income.

The integrated solution provided by Ntsika Holdings, Geuterbrück and Online Intelligence makes it possible to refocus attention on business activities that generate income. All this while using technology to optimise the operational response to the coronavirus and reduce manual monitoring, which is often labour intensive and difficult to manage effectively in diverse operational settings.

Using their object recognition and deep learning capability, Geuterbrück deploys visual AI to ensure people are wearing masks

The visual artificial intelligence technology by Geuterbrück scans hundreds of people simultaneously to ensure compliance with the mandatory wearing of face masks and PPE in work and public places. The detection of a single person not wearing a face mask will call for a different response as opposed to a situation where there are multiple persons not wearing face masks. The response will also differ if a person with a high temperature is detected.

Unique response conditions call for highly configurable solutions like CiiMS

The unique responses required to operational events and circumstances such as in the example highlighted above requires a highly configurable solution. This is where the integration into the Online Intelligence CiiMS application becomes crucial. CiiMS’ ability to trigger unique and conditional incident escalation procedures based on the events received ensures that personnel tasked with the operational response are carefully guided against the companies' policies and procedures, while ensuring the necessary attestation and remediations are executed and documented throughout the entire process.

The value derived from the integration of technologies spans across different use cases, as was the case with a key mining sector client that required a PSIM process transformation. The solution it required involved how the mine responds to incidents leading to losses within the business, particularly the loss of high-value assets.

Ntsika, Geuterbrück and Online Intelligence responded to the requirement by utilising the video content analysis to understand the context between the object and behaviour, all through the deep learning capabilities within Geuterbrück and integrating this real-time information into the Online Intelligence CiiMS Application to execute and activate the appropriate incident management protocols and business processes. The solution transformed the PSIM framework for the client from a traditional reactive based response to having deep insights into when and where the next incident will occur, using visual intelligence to inform these insights and ensuring the correct proactive response to the risk is triggered.

“The blending of our visual intelligence solution with the pedigree platform from Online Intelligence, along with the digital expertise and understanding of the clients business from Ntsika has meant a solution that presents automation for the early detection of potential risk to high-value assets. In addition, the dependency on human intervention has been effectively reduced while adding additional layers of scalability without having to increase human resource to do so,” says Bernard Senekal, Managing Director, Geuterbrück Southern Africa.

Volatile change like COVID-19 calls for collaboration to provide dynamic solutions

The sudden onset of COVID-19 and the dire impact left in its wake has re-emphasised that circumstances can change rapidly, demanding solutions to be made available as quickly as they become apparent. The strength and value of the collaboration between Ntsika, Geuterbrück and Online Intelligence, other than the vast collective experience base across various sectors and industries, is that the visual AI framework can be easily and effectively deployed to address a multitude of business use cases.

“The dynamic nature of risk, coupled with the growing demand for optimisation of investment, has seen the use of technology evolve to a state where it needs to address multiple business requirements. The time for single-use solutions and technologies are fading quickly, being replaced by ecosystems where technologies converge to supplement and complement one another to provide meaningful business impact across a broad spectrum of use cases,” says Arnold van den Bout, Chief Operating Officer, Online Intelligence.

Understanding and cultivating this symbiotic approach to solution design has enabled Ntsika, Geuterbrück and Online Intelligence to forge a powerful, client-centric approach that pivots on each other’s strengths in industry, achieving enriched results derived from collaboration. As we navigate our way through uncertain and unprecedented times, those we surround ourselves will be key to our ability to not only survive, but to thrive.
