The Digital Migration Working Group`s (DMWG`s) sub-committees are due to submit their progress reports on the digital migration process for South African TV and radio to the working group today.
The reports are based on all issues identified since the last meeting, where it was agreed that the sub-committees would consult with industry players, put together the reports and submit them at the next meeting.
The Department of Communications` Zoyisile Mshunqane, who also sits in the policy and content sub-committee, says they have not yet established the timeline for SA`s switch over from analogue to digital TV.
"Although we are looking at the end of March 2006 as deadline for a timeline, the timeline will only be established once we have developed the broader policy framework. This issue will, however, be part of today`s discussions," says Mshunqane.
He also could not say what is contained in the progress reports, including the policy and content sub-committee report. "All will be revealed in today`s meeting."
Mshunqane says the communications department`s chief director, Norman Munzhelele, is responsible for the working group, following the death of Mmathapelo Lengosane, who was the working group`s project manager.
"I`m temporarily acting in Munzhelele`s place. He is currently out of the country and will only be back next week," says Mshunqane.
The four sub-committees are made up of the technical and standard platforms group, a policy and regulatory affairs group, a sub-committee on broadcasting content and culture, as well as a sub-committee on economic analysis and finance.
The DMWG is responsible for the development of SA`s strategy and timelines for the switch over from analogue to digital TV and radio.
