Dell reveals storage roadmap

IT vendor, Dell has unveiled data management products aimed at furthering the company's presence in the enterprise data centre space, reports InformationWeek.

The Dell EqualLogic FS7500 network-attached storage, Dell PowerVault storage arrays, and EqualLogic software are all part of Dell's ongoing push to provide comprehensive data storage solutions.

Roger Cox, research VP at Gartner, says: “Storage is part of what [Dell] is trying to do as it integrates products in storage and networking management solutions to make them more competitive in the data centre market.”

PC World says Dell claims to have around 30% of the worldwide server market, but Michael Dell says the 'big data' question means that isn't enough to address what companies need to deliver on data management, both operationally and on security and compliance issues.

“We had to take on the server solutions challenge, which is what we've done with our acquisitions by going deeper into the enterprise applications space, it's not enough for these companies to just buy another bigger, more powerful server - they need to manage the data more efficiently.”

According to ZDnet, Dell is also developing an upgrade for its EqualLogic software.

Version 5.1 will arrive with enhancements for VMware environments, support for iSCSI networking via Data Centre Bridging, and the ability to automatically balance storage traffic among EqualLogic arrays.
