December 2010 saw the Truter family being featured on local radio station 94.7 Highveld Stereo's popular Christmas Wish List initiative.
Local customer services specialist, Inter-Active Technologies, responded to their plight and donated R100 000 towards Bronwyn's medical fees, contributing specifically to the 24-hour private nursing care that has allowed to her to continue her recovery from the comfort of her home.
April will mark a full year since 10-year-old Bronwyn Truter fell into a coma after being diagnosed with severe insulin dependent diabetes type 1. Following her three-month coma, Bronwyn suffered cardiac arrest, impaired vision and sustained brain damage to her right frontal lobe. Despite these overwhelming conditions, Bronwyn's parents say that a year down the line, things seem to be getting a little better.
“Having her at home has definitely made a difference, as the hospital environment was very tough on her, and us as a family. The comfort of being at home with 24-hour nursing care has really helped to improve her situation,” says Bronwyn's father, Craig Truter.
Inter-Active Technologies has taken it upon itself to increase and continue its aid to the Truter family, and has pledged further support for Bronwyn by committing to sponsor her nursing costs for the remainder of the year. This will increase the donation value to over R300 000 by the end of the year.
“The medical fees for Bronwyn are immense, our medical aid paid over R4 million last year to get her to where she is today, however, the road ahead is sure to be a long one, and the support that Inter-Active Technologies has pledged to continue is absolutely crucial,” concludes Truter.
Inter-Active Technologies Managing Director Jacqui van Staaden explains: “Bronwyn's story is one that really resonated with us, what she has been through so far is completely unimaginable, all we can do is try to support her as best we can and urge others to do so too.”
At a meeting recently held at Inter-Active Technologies headquarters, Bronwyn's parents met with the company's executive committee and they spent time getting updated on Bronwyn's progress and continuous medical requirements, which include regular appointments with her paediatric neurologist, her paediatric ENT, paediatric endocrinologist and paediatric dietician. Further gifts were bestowed upon the Truters, including presents for Bronwyn and her two siblings, and CEO and MD husband and wife partnership, Brendan and Jacqui van Staaden also offered to sponsor DSTV in a personal capacity for the Truters. “This family is in a very traumatic and difficult situation and we hope to alleviate some of their burdens in any way we can. In accordance with our company's 'Investing in People' motto, we will ensure that Bronwyn continues to receive the specialised care and nursing this year that she desperately needs,” concludes Van Staaden.
